Code Enforcement

Our community is a shared space. To keep it safe, healthy, and vibrant, we follow a set of standards known as City Codes. Code Enforcement is the process of ensuring these local laws—covering property maintenance, building safety, and land use—are followed by everyone.

Why It Matters

Code enforcement is about more than just "rules." It is a vital service that:

Common Violations

Most code enforcement activities involve "public nuisances" or property maintenance issues, such as:

  • Overgrown Vegetation: High grass, weeds, or untrimmed trees blocking sidewalks.

  • Inoperable Vehicles: Junked or unregistered cars parked on lawns or public rights-of-way.

  • Debris & Trash: Accumulation of household waste, appliances, or tires in yards.

  • Housing Standards: Peeling paint, leaking roofs, or broken windows that make a building unsafe or unsightly.

How the Process Works

Our primary goal is voluntary compliance. We prefer to work with property owners through education rather than through penalties.

  1. Investigation: A case begins when an officer observes a violation or receives a resident complaint.

  2. Notification: If a violation is found, we issue a Notice of Violation or a "Courtesy Notice" explaining what needs to be fixed and by when.

  3. Re-inspection: An officer will return after the deadline. If the issue is fixed, the case is closed.

  4. Enforcement: If a property remains out of compliance, it may lead to fines, liens, or a summons to Municipal Court.
